I am a professor in software engineering at Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands. I hold a PhD from the University of Amsterdam (1994), and an MSc degree from the Vrije Universiteit (1990).
My research interests include software testing, trustworthy AI, language models for software engineering, and human aspects of software engineering. I served as program co-chair of ACM/IEEE ICSE 2021 and ESEC/FSE 2017, and presently as Steering Committee Chair of the ACM/IEEE International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE).
In my research, I seek close collaboration with industry and societal partners, in the tech, financial, and government sectors. Based on my research, I co-founded two spin-off companies The Software Improvement Group (2000) and PerfectXL (2013). Since 2022 I serve as a member of the Advisory Council for IT Assessments (AcICT) of the Dutch Government, and since 2024 as a member of the Advisory Board of ING Bank Netherlands. In 2023 I was elected as fellow of the Netherlands Academy of Engineering (NAE).
On my blog you’ll find my musings on software engineering, teaching, doing research, open access, and perhaps more. See also my:
